Une paire de cristaux piézoélectriques installés sur la base de la fourche fait vibrer la fourche à une fréquence de résonance donnée. Lorsque la fourche de l'interrupteur de niveau à fourche vibrante entre en contact avec le milieu à mesurer, la fréquence et l'amplitude de la fourche changent. Ces variations sont détectées et traitées par le circuit intelligent, puis converties en un signal de commutation
