Hygienic Pressure Transmitter Selection

A hygienic pressure transmitter is selected as part of a cleanable process boundary, not merely by choosing a flush diaphragm. The process connection, wetted materials, surface condition, seals, drainability, cleaning and sterilisation cycles, dead-space risk, fill fluid, installation orientation and project documentation must be reviewed together for the actual medium and facility standard.

Engineering selection logic

Begin with the user requirement specification and the plant connection standard. Clamp, threaded, flange and proprietary hygienic interfaces are not interchangeable simply because their nominal sizes look similar. Identify the exact mating ferrule or socket, gasket material, sealing geometry, pressure rating and installation orientation. The assembly should avoid an undocumented recess or cavity, but cleanability can only be assessed from the selected connection drawing and the plant cleaning procedure.

Process and cleaning conditions may be more demanding than the normal measurement point. Record product temperature, cleaning chemistry, concentration, duration, sterilisation temperature, pressure, vacuum and thermal cycling. Consider whether a diaphragm seal or fill fluid is exposed to rapid temperature change and whether the medium can coat, crystallise or damage a seal. Material compatibility and surface-finish values require current evidence for the proposed wetted parts; they should not be inferred from marketing terms.

Finally state the documentation needed for design review, validation and receiving inspection. Examples may include dimensional drawings, material declarations, surface-finish records, elastomer information, calibration documents or a specific approval where applicable. Request only documents relevant to the project and verify that their scope includes the selected model and connection. Does a flush diaphragm automatically make a transmitter hygienic?

No. A flush diaphragm can reduce an exposed pressure passage, but hygienic suitability also depends on the complete connection geometry, gasket, wetted materials, surface condition, installation orientation, drainability and cleaning procedure. The mating process connection matters as much as the instrument side. Review a dimensioned drawing and the facility requirement specification, then request the relevant material, surface or approval evidence for the exact model and connection before treating it as a hygienic assembly.

Which cleaning data should be included in an RFQ?

List each cleaning or sterilisation method, chemical, concentration, maximum temperature and pressure, cycle duration, rinse condition and frequency. Include vacuum and the fastest heating or cooling transition if relevant. State whether the instrument remains installed and powered throughout the cycle. These conditions support a review of wetted materials, seals, fill system and thermal effects. Final acceptance should reference the selected configuration and controlled documents, not a general product-family description.

What documents may be needed for a hygienic project?

The project may request connection drawings, wetted-material declarations, surface-finish evidence, elastomer information, calibration records or an applicable certificate. The correct list depends on the facility standard and intended use; more paperwork is not automatically better evidence. Name each required document in the RFQ and verify the legal entity, model, connection, material, scope and validity where relevant.
