Calibration & Measurement Traceability

Calibration compares an instrument indication or output with a reference under documented conditions; traceability is the recorded chain connecting that result to stated references and uncertainties. Neither term alone proves accuracy in service. This page does not claim an accredited TYCK laboratory or universal calibration scope. The required method, laboratory, points and certificate must be confirmed for the ordered configuration.

PRACTICAL PROCESS

How to use this information

  1. Specify the calibration task

    State the measurand, range, units, calibration points, direction, process connection, output, required uncertainty or acceptance criterion and whether as-found and as-left data are needed. Include the intended use and applicable project procedure.

  2. Confirm laboratory and reference scope

    Identify who performs the work, the method, environmental conditions, reference standards and their traceability. If accreditation is required, verify the legal laboratory, accrediting body, certificate and scope for the measurand and range.

  3. Review the delivered certificate

    Match the certificate to the instrument serial number and ordered configuration. Check points, units, actual results, uncertainty where applicable, reference identifiers, dates, signatures and any adjustment or out-of-tolerance statement before accepting the record.

Which document takes priority?

  1. Executed contract and signed technical agreement: Controls the agreed scope, exceptions and acceptance terms for the transaction.
  2. Approved order confirmation and configuration datasheet: Controls the ordered model, SKU, options, quantity and order-specific deliverables.
  3. Current model/SKU drawing, manual, certificate or test record: Supports the applicable technical value or evidence claim when its identity, revision and scope match.
  4. Public webpage or sales summary: Supports discovery only and does not override an approved configuration or order document.

Important limitations

  • A calibration certificate documents a defined comparison; it does not remove installation, process, drift or application effects.
  • Accreditation applies only to the named laboratory and published scope, not automatically to every measurand, range or service.

Is calibration the same as adjustment or verification?

No. Calibration establishes the relationship between indication or output and reference values under stated conditions. Adjustment changes the instrument response, while verification checks whether a defined requirement is met. A service can include more than one activity, but the record should distinguish them and retain as-found data before adjustment when required. Specify the desired points, uncertainty or acceptance rule and reporting format so the delivered certificate reflects the intended task.

What does measurement traceability require?

Traceability requires a documented, unbroken chain of calibrations or comparisons to stated references, with each link contributing to measurement uncertainty. It is not established merely by printing the word traceable. Review the performing laboratory, method, reference identifiers, calibration status, environmental conditions and uncertainty information. If accredited work is required, confirm that the laboratory’s current scope covers the measurand, range and service; an accreditation logo alone is not enough.

How should an out-of-tolerance result be handled?

Preserve the as-found result, identify the affected points and assess whether adjustment, repair or rejection is appropriate under the agreed procedure. If work continues, record the action and as-left results without erasing the original condition. The purchaser may need to assess previously collected process data or installed use, which is outside a generic certificate. Define notification and disposition requirements in the order when out-of-tolerance findings could affect project acceptance or operational decisions.
