Engineering Selection Guide

Category overview

Pressure measurement starts by defining what the reading is referenced to. Gauge pressure compares the process with local atmosphere, absolute pressure compares it with vacuum, and differential pressure compares two process points. Those distinctions affect zero behaviour, calibration and installation. A useful specification therefore records the normal value, start-up and shutdown values, possible vacuum, maximum working pressure and the fastest credible pressure surge. Selecting only from the normal operating point can leave too little span for control or too little protection for an upset.

The process medium is equally important. Temperature, viscosity, solids, crystallisation, corrosion, oxygen service and hygienic cleaning can change the appropriate wetted material or require an isolating seal. A hot impulse line may cool the process before it reaches the sensor, while a direct-mounted device sees the process temperature more closely. Pulsating pumps and compressors can need damping, and a liquid head between the tapping point and instrument can shift the indicated zero. These are application effects rather than corrections that should be assumed from a catalogue photograph.

Pressure products also serve different jobs. A mechanical gauge gives local indication without loop power; a transmitter sends a signal to a controller; a differential transmitter measures the difference between two connections; and a controller or switch creates an alarm or action. The best device is the one whose function, installation and evidence match the measurement task. When requesting a TYCK configuration, identify the reference type, range and units, process connection, wetted materials, output, supply, display, enclosure, ambient conditions and any documented approval requirement.

Use the product cards below as an index to published families, not as permission to interchange models. Exact accuracy, overload, temperature effects, ingress protection and certificates can differ by order code. If a value is absent, place it in the enquiry as a required confirmation. A technical response should connect the proposed SKU to its current datasheet, drawing or certificate and should state any protective accessory, such as a siphon, snubber, manifold or diaphragm seal, that forms part of the proposed measurement assembly.

Selection factors

Reference and span
State gauge, absolute, sealed-gauge or differential reference. Give minimum, normal and maximum operating values, required calibrated span, vacuum exposure, proof or upset pressure and whether zero must be elevated or suppressed.
Medium and temperature
Describe the fluid, concentration, process and ambient temperatures, solids or crystallisation, cleaning method and special concerns such as oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine or sanitary duty. Wetted compatibility must be verified rather than inferred.
Mechanical installation
Define thread or flange standard, connection size, mounting orientation, available space, vibration and pulsation. Note impulse lines, seal systems, siphons, manifolds and the vertical liquid head between the tapping point and sensing element.
Signal and documentation
List loop power, analogue or digital output, local display, cable entry, enclosure environment and the receiving system. Identify certificates, material records, drawings or calibration documents that procurement requires for the selected code.

Typical applications

  • Utility and process skids where a transmitter supplies the control system and a local gauge gives operators an independent indication.
  • Pump, compressor, filter and pipeline monitoring where pulsation, vibration, overpressure and tapping location are considered during selection.
  • Tank vapour pressure or hydrostatic service where the reference leg, liquid density and elevation between vessel and instrument are defined.

Limitations and confirmation points

  • A generic pressure category cannot establish metrological performance. Accuracy, turndown, stability and environmental effects belong to a particular model, span and configuration and require its controlled document.
  • Do not assume suitability for hazardous areas, oxygen service, hydrogen permeation, hygienic use or a safety function. Each duty needs compatible construction and the exact certificate or written evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Which pressure reference should an enquiry specify?

Use gauge pressure when the process is intentionally compared with local atmosphere, absolute pressure when vacuum is the fixed reference, and differential pressure when the difference between two process points is the measurement. Sealed-gauge arrangements may be considered for high-pressure ranges, but their behaviour still needs model-specific confirmation. State the engineering reference explicitly; a unit such as bar or psi does not identify it.

Why are minimum, normal and maximum pressure all required?

The three values help evaluate resolution at normal operation, usable span during control and survival during an upset. Include vacuum, start-up spikes and relief settings where relevant. A range selected only to survive the maximum may provide poor useful resolution, while one selected only around normal pressure may be exposed to overload. Final span and overload capability must be checked against the proposed SKU.

When should accessories be included in the pressure assembly?

Hot steam can require a siphon or suitable isolation arrangement; pulsating service may need damping; differential service commonly needs a manifold; and corrosive, viscous or hygienic media may require a diaphragm seal. These examples are not automatic prescriptions. Describe the medium, temperature, cleaning, dynamics and installation so the supplier can document the complete assembly and any resulting temperature or response effects.
